The country was still under the influence of the coffee cycle that had followed the previous ones based on extracting or agricultural products. Presently commodities tend to dominate our exports and this trend can be emphasized by the large oil reserves in the Pre-salt. The following question is rather relevant: Is Brazil and will it be essentially a commodity exporter? In the past many countries used their natural resources for levering their development; in the second half of the past century it was believed that natural resources would not further development and could even hinder it. Has Brazil the conditions to solve this paradox? Brazil - Energy and Competitiveness João Antonio Moreira Patusco The comparative analysis of energy consumption matrixes of different country groups complemented by commodities external trade indexes shows that Brazil has been loosing international competitiveness. Leite The compatibility between remuneration of energy generation from sugar-alcohol plants to stimulate the sector and the guarantee of reduced tariffs require the implementation of actions to harmonize the conflict between the objectives of the regulating agent, namely fix a tariff that stimulates new investments and that is socially just. The international experience indicates that the diversification of the energy matrix can significantly help to reach these objectives.
